FeelTect began its journey in the renowned BioInnovate Programme in 2016, where CEO Dr. Andrew Cameron spent time in University Hospital Galway (UHG) and Mayo Clinic identifying unmet clinical needs. With the guidance of Dr. Georgina Gethin, Head of Nursing at NUI Galway, a critical need was identified for a way to improve the application and maintenance of evidence-based pressure during compression therapy of venous leg ulcers (VLUs), for improved healing outcomes and quality of life.
An Enterprise Ireland Commercialisation Fund began in January 2018 for the development of Tight Alright, a pressure-sensing, connected-health device for use during compression therapy of VLUs. The technology was patented in December 2018 and FeelTect was founded by Dr. Cameron, Dr. Darren Burke and Prof. Garry Duffy in May 2019.
Venous Leg Ulcers (VLUs) are painful, odorous, and unsightly wounds affecting 4% of people 65 years and older, with 2.2 million new cases each year in the US and Europe alone. Compression therapy is a proven treatment for VLUs, however if insufficient pressure is applied, it’s ineffective, while excessive application of pressure can be dangerous to the patient. Unfortunately, targeted pressure is only achieved 10% of the time in clinical practice. Consequently, the average VLU healing time is 4 months and 20% don’t heal within a year.
To address these issues, FeelTect delivers Tight Alright, the first device to use wearable, connected-health technology (Class I), for measuring and monitoring sub-bandage pressure during compression therapy, both inside and outside the clinical setting. Not only is this important for enabling correct application of compression therapy, the monitoring capabilities facilitate assessment of compliance and loss of efficacious compression due to swelling reduction, improving the potential for maintaining gold-standard therapy throughout the course of VLU treatment.
Ultimately, FeelTect aims to realise the full therapeutic potential of compression therapy, through safety, efficacy, and empowerment.
